Joint restoration · 1983 + 1985
Two
Californians.
Purchased together and restored together: a chronological record of the red 1983 and blue 1985 Mongoose Californians, from their mixed as-acquired condition through teardown, frame work, mechanical service, and final assembly.
Starting point
Two bikes,
one shared project.
The first views establish both bikes as purchased and preserve the details that would guide the work: fit, component placement, finish condition, and the contrast between the red and blue builds.
Teardown + frame work
Inspect everything
before rebuilding anything.
The hubs, bearings, fork, headset, stem, bottom bracket, and frame joints were opened, measured, cleaned, and checked. Fixtures kept the frame work controlled and repeatable.
Service + parts
Clean, identify,
then assemble.
Fork and headset service led into surface preparation, stem work, wheel hardware, decals, and matched red and blue contact points. The replacement-parts standard remained consistent throughout.
Finished pair
Chrome / red.
Chrome / blue.
The final views bring the restoration back together: matching period silhouettes, distinct color systems, and a shared standard for the replacement parts used. The blue bike’s silver Power Plate was later replaced with an original in black.
